Gardening in small spaces is generally overlooked in garden design manuals. Garden design is often presented as a list of principles or rules and illustrated on a grand scale. Most of us do not have acres of land on which to carefully calculate the width versus length of our perennial borders. Many of us don’t have the time or the inclination to undertake the maintenance these acres of gardens would need.

Gardening in a small space has its limits, but it need not be limiting. In a small garden, the gardener can pay attention to detail. You can keep on top of maintenance, while still having time to sit and enjoy your small garden. In fact, many small space gardens are designed around entertaining and sitting areas, rather then the need to nurture plants.

Generally, small gardens are in urban environments or built into larger projects as courtyards. Small gardens can be a real challenge to create adequate entertaining areas whilst retaining sufficient space for planting and other features. Small gardens, if designed well, will add value to a property as it creates another room and increasingly small gardens in towns and cities are a much needed haven from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

5 ways to give your bath a makeover without breaking the bank

Whether a bathroom facelift succeeds or fails will likely come down to one item — color. The warmer the better because let’s face it... on some mornings, it's cold enough without feeling as if you’re walking into an ice-cube tray.

“We tell our customers to use a warm color instead of a cold color in a bathroom,” said Patrick Schmidt, of J. Baker Interiors of Carmel, Ind. and a member of the American Society of Interior Designers. “The ladies especially, because compact fluorescent lighting is cooler and makes you look paler. When putting on makeup, they might walk out looking like they’re going out for the evening, when really they’re going to work.”

Schmidt recommends colors such as sage green or warm browns. He recently did a bathroom in a caramel color. But he cautions against getting too warm. The bath that went caramel complemented a master bedroom that was a reddish-orange. “That’s too intense for a bath,” Schmidt said.

He also said wallpaper, especially in a smaller bath, may be tough to pull off. “Go with a neutral in warm tones rather than a busy pattern like floral. Busy patterns are much too intense so early in the morning.”

Pick your colors last
Schmidt recommends taking stock of your lighting and other elements of the bath. “Once you have your cabinets, countertop and flooring, then put the color on the wall,” he said. “The color you choose can change the look of everything you’ve done.”

Don’t forget that skylights or window tinting can make paint look more gray or brown. Schmidt says to put a sample of the color you’re considering on all the walls, not just one and look at it at varying times of the day and even at night to make sure you like the color and it works with the room’s other elements.
